As expected there is quite a lot of paperwork required to make both Safari Drives clients and vehicles legal and legitimate when on the road in Africa. For different reasons we operate both locally registered and Uk registered vehicles. This is due to the fact that different countries require different documents and when a vehicle is regularly crossing international boundaries it can be easier if the vehicle is registered back here in the UK.
These are main areas of documentation you should be aware of.
Insurance policies
Our vehicles are fully covered for any eventuality. They are insured by a fully comprehensive insurance policy and for third party for ALL the countries you are travelling through
Carnet de Passage.
For the UK based vehicles to travel freely through Africa they have to have a document called a Carnet de Passage, it is an important document allowing the vehicle to cross borders without having to pay vehicle customs importation charges. On arrival or departure from a country the carnet has to be stamped.
Drivers Authority Letter
If you are crossing borders the as well as the Carnet you will need to show a Drivers Authority Letter. This is a standard letter that we will provide you with that states that you, the driver has full permission to be driving the vehicle you are in. It will have the vehicle registration number, chassis number and the clients names marked down on it.
Temporary import permits.
This is a customs generated document which covers you for the temporary import of the vehicle. This will be given to you at Customs & Immigration. Each vehicle will carry a 6 month TIP which will be asked for at the border. This document has to stay in the vehicle at all times including when the vehicle is handed back to our base at the end of a trip.
